notmetaphoric asked: Was that directed at me? I'm not trying to be salty or anything. I'm not totally sure what kind of argument Bill Maher is trying to make, either complaining that they both are saying the same things or that Mitt is somehow stealing from Obama and being flippant and more appealing because he is white. I don't think that even largely matters in a sense that there's so much continuity in American foreign policy goals that neither party can diverge much.

that’s exactly what bill maher is saying! he’s saying these policies are basically the same, but romney tries to make himself sound better, which is stupid, because they are so clearly so similar, and trying to do that just makes him sound like a racist fuck (which incidentally he is)

notmetaphoric asked: I didn't know you went to grad school. That's pretty cool. Where? And what for? Is it worth getting an advanced degree?

i got my M.A. in english at seton hall. it was worth it for a variety of reasons:

  • i was able to make an educated decision about whether or not i wanted to get my Ph.D. (one that i may still recant)
  • the teaching experience is great - i honestly think most personality types could benefit from doing some time in the classroom
  • i got a fair amount of respect in job interviews when i elected to go back to the workforce from academia; however, the downside of that is that most people didn’t see how my experience in grad school could help me in an office environment, because people are stupid.

notmetaphoric replied to your post: i don’t know her name yet

Pretty sure it’s Doris Burke. She’s just about the only woman who commentates on men’s sports.

Doris Burke? I’m watching the game but not listening to it. I think I saw her on the screen. She’s a fantastic commentator.

this could be right! i just looked her up and she’s from jersey so i automatically love her.

notmetaphoric asked: What's the worst show you've ever been to?

my freshman year of college i went with my friend amy to see everclear. they were playing on campus and it was cheap, so we went. i’m not sure we made it to the actual everclear part of the show because the opening band - whose name i can’t remember and can’t seem to find on the internet - was SO BAD. the lead singer was this horrible prick with silver eyeliner who cursed at the audience and couldn’t keep up with the changes. after the fifth shitty comment about “hot girls at penn state,” we were over it. we left and got ice cream. it’s the only show like that that i’ve ever left early.

notmetaphoric asked: History, to be exact. That's some great advice, thank you, because goddamn I love what I do.

yeah, exactly! that’s the best reason to go to grad school, man. and like, for me, it ended up that i didn’t make it my career. i really enjoyed teaching but i needed a job and health insurance and figured out a way to parlay my master’s into a career, and i think it was the right choice for me on a practical level. but it opened the door - just a crack - to making something that i’m really passionate about part of my life’s work, and i think that’s always worth the time and effort.

plus, dude, in this economy? you’re not gonna find a job anyway HO HO HO. might as well stay in school.

ALSO my last piece of advice is DO NOT PAY FOR GRAD SCHOOL. get a teaching assistanceship with a stipend. they are out there.
