Thanks for this, really. I’m such a goody two-shoes at heart that any authoritative reprimand still makes me feel like I’m being sent to the principals office. It’s nice to have people around to smack me back down to reasonable.

i’ve just been on the other side of this, is all. i had a student in my office once who i called in to talk about a (what seemed like a much more) egregious case of plagiarism and she broke down in tears in the middle of the conversation and showed me all of her notes on her outlines and etc etc etc. i didn’t want to make her cry and your teacher doesn’t want to make you cry either. when you show her how seriously you take the problem it will be okay.

That I did something so stupid. I’m so careful about shit like this. Dumb. Now I have to go in tomorrow and say “It was an accident, I was working on four other papers at the same time, and I pushed yours off until the last minute and didn’t have enough time to make sure I included every source I used.” and she’s going to laugh in my face.

I hate this. Worst day ever.

most professors can tell the difference between intentional and accidental plagiarism, and most of them make this part so stressful on you because they want to put the fear of god in you. i know that sucks, but they’ve got a point - intentional plagiarism IS serious, and anyone who winds up making a living as an academic has to take intellectual theft really seriously since they don’t make any money so real theft doesn’t apply.

she won’t laugh at you, she’ll just be stern with you, and just remember, ultimately even the most totalitarian of programs won’t punish you for something you didn’t do. if she tries to give you a zero or fuck your grade, ask to speak with the department chair and present your case. tell them you learned your lesson about taking proper care and you’ll be fine.

i understand your agitation, but you have to remember - anyone working as a college professor has been in your shoes (a zillion papers to do, no time in which to do them) more recently than you realize. give them a little credit for their humanity.

Oh no. I don’t blame them at all and I understand why it’s such a big deal. As an English major and a pretty honest person (I like to think), one of my BIGGEST sticklers is plagiarism and I’m usually anal beyond belief about citing, which is why I’m so mad at myself and myself alone. I only meant she could laugh in my face because I did something careless, not because she doesn’t care. She was actually very understanding about it and didn’t seem to think I did it intentionally. Basically I used a specific article as my main source for the paper and when writing my outline I was being careless with my sources and because I had so many things I was sourcing from that particular article, I pushed it off till the end and forgot about it. See. Stupid. I’m bringing her my original outline and I spent about 20 minutes fixing all my citations to show her I at least recognize what I did. I just wish we could have hashed this out earlier and not put it off till tomorrow. Now I’m going to be nervous all through my final for another class that I have at 8 AM.

not stupid! if you’re the only source of your angst about this for the love of god woman, don’t beat yourself up! if you bring all those sources in she’s gonna know you’re being honest with her and it will be okay.
